“The safeguards will hold,” Amy said, slamming a tea kettle onto the stove with enough force to slosh water from the spout.

“No one said they wouldn’t,” her husband offered, keeping far away from the woman he loved.

“If I’d known what we were up against—” Amy shot a glare at Erin “—I’d have had them stronger in the beginning.”

“I didn’t know, either, remember?” Erin said.

Afternoon sunlight speared through the high kitchen window and lay in golden slashes across the gleaming oak table.

“I didn’t say you did,” Amy snapped, slapping tea cups and saucers onto the table with the gentle care of Sherman marching through Richmond. “All I’m saying is, I can’t very well erect safeguards if I don’t know what I’m fighting.”

“Santos said—”

Amy shot her husband a look that had his eyebrows lifting and his gaze dropping to the newspaper spread out on the table in front of him.

“Santos is the one who should have known what he was inviting into the house. As a Guardian, it’s his responsibility to—”

Erin sighed and tuned out the rest of her rant. It seemed she was back on Amy’s wrong side. Now that she knew the other woman was a witch, Erin was eager to make friends again. The entire household had been on red alert for days and tensions were higher than usual. It had been three days since Maggie had come to the house with murder on her mind. Three days since Erin and Santos had first come together.

And those three days were, in some ways, better than any she had ever known. Yes, the sex was spectacular. Every time she was with Ricardo, she felt their connection deepen, strengthen. She knew darn well she should be keeping her distance from him—but truth be told, she didn’t want to. In the weirdness that was her life, he had become something of an anchor. The one steady and true point in her life and she needed him now more than ever.

As he’d promised, her psychic abilities were growing. When she experienced visions now, they were richer, deeper, more vivid.

Yet…there could be no soft sighs and dreams of a nebulous future. And the more she came to care for Santos the more she realized how much she was going to miss him when their time together was over. But she wouldn’t stay with a man who didn’t want her.

Besides, until the danger had passed, how could she be sure that what she was feeling for Santos wasn’t just an adrenaline-born lust that felt like more because she needed it to be more?

Amy set a delicate, bone china teapot in the middle of the table and scooped loose tea into the pot. Then she paused, took a long breath and closed her eyes as she released that pent up breath in a long, slow rush. “I’m sorry. Both of you.” She shrugged, shook her head and said, “It’s only that I feel stupid. And foolish. That old woman spiked our tea and I never saw it coming.
